Why San Diego

Why San Diego Is a High-Impact Service Corridor

San Diego and North County form one of the most important military corridors in the country for Marine and Navy recruiting. Camp Pendleton has more than 42,000 active-duty Marines and Sailors. MCAS Miramar supports 11,202 active-duty personnel. Naval Base San Diego is homeport to 60+ ships and 200+ tenant commands. MCRD San Diego reinforces military identity and awareness across the entire metro.

That density means thousands of motivated service members looking for meaningful off-duty community service — and thousands of veterans, seniors, and neighbors across Oceanside, San Marcos, Vista, Carlsbad, Escondido, and the broader San Diego metro who need help maintaining their yards.

The Single Marine Program at Camp Pendleton already normalizes community service as part of Marine culture. IWTMYL adds a specific, repeatable option: free yard relief for neighbors in need. It’s direct, it’s visible, and it’s the kind of mission that feels “Marine-quality” — show up, serve, leave it better than you found it.

MOVSM: What Qualifies + How to Request a Letter

The Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal recognizes service members who perform sustained, direct volunteer service to the civilian community. Under DoD policy (DoDM 1348.33, Vol 2), qualifying service must meet four criteria:

  • Voluntary — not detailed, tasked, or part of a command-sponsored project
  • Civilian community oriented — serving neighbors, not military infrastructure
  • Tangible results — visible, measurable impact (a mowed yard qualifies)
  • Sustained — a pattern of service, not a single event
Critical distinction: If your command organizes a base cleanup or tasks you to participate in a unit service project, those hours typically do not qualify for MOVSM. The service must be voluntary and off-duty. IWTMYL missions are always voluntary, always civilian, and always documented — exactly what the award criteria require.

There is no DoD-mandated minimum hour threshold for the MOVSM. Requirements vary by service branch and installation. Consult your chain of command for local guidance.

What We Provide

  • Official hour verification letter on 501(c)(3) letterhead
  • Detailed service log (dates, hours, households served, service types)
  • Written confirmation that service was voluntary and civilian in nature
  • Willingness to verify information if contacted by your command

SMP-Friendly

SMP-Friendly: Bring a Buddy, Do One Mission, You’re Done by Lunch

Camp Pendleton’s Single Marine Program explicitly lists volunteer opportunities like cleanups and veteran/retirement home visits — community service is culturally normal for Marines here. IWTMYL adds a specific, recurring option: real yard relief for real neighbors, with individually documented hours.

Bring a buddy. Accept a mission near Oceanside or North County. Mow one yard. You’re done before lunch. Your hours are tracked, your impact is visible, and your verification letter is ready whenever you need it.

Military spouses and families in the San Diego area are equally welcome. Each family member registers individually. Volunteer hours create real resume experience — community coordination, scheduling, equipment logistics, and measurable impact. No long-term commitment required.

FAQs (Photos, Insurance, Scheduling, Transportation)

Can I volunteer off base near Camp Pendleton?
Yes. All IWTMYL missions take place in civilian neighborhoods. You browse available requests in Oceanside, San Marcos, Vista, Carlsbad, Escondido, and greater San Diego County.
How far from base are the requests?
Most requests are within 15–30 minutes of Camp Pendleton or Miramar. You choose which to accept based on distance and your availability.
Can my unit do this together?
Yes. We coordinate group missions for 5–50+ service members. For MOVSM purposes, participation must be voluntary and off-duty. To plan one, submit a Group Mission Request and our team will coordinate directly with your unit.
Do I need my own mower?
Most volunteers bring their own. After 10 hours of service, volunteers are eligible for an eco-friendly battery-powered equipment upgrade through our partner program.
How do I get a verification letter?
Request one here and we’ll generate it on official 501(c)(3) letterhead with your name, dates, hours, and service details.
Are before/after photos allowed?
We encourage them. Before/after photos help document your service impact. We never photograph homeowners without consent.
Is IWTMYL insured?
Yes. IWTMYL carries $1M in general liability insurance that covers all registered volunteers during authorized service visits.
